Discover Drenthe

Drents Museum, Assen

The ‘Discover Drenthe’ web app allows visitors to discover hidden worlds and connect Drenthe's landscape with the culture and history of different locations.

In the family-oriented ‘Discover Drenthe’ project, special stories and objects from the Drents Museum are brought to life at notable locations in the province.

For example, the Yde girl is not only on display in the Drents Museum but people can physically travel to the place where she was sacrificed to experience an interactive story. Or create your very own landscape photograph in the same countryside that inspired Van Gogh and other great painters. Each experience invites you to discover more about the surrounding area.

Example of one game

Augmented Reality (AR) allows us to place historical people or landscape elements back in the environment – like watching a historical tram pass by again. By adding audio, the experience truly comes to life. Families can also take on different roles in various experiences. Digital experiences see them working as a family cutting peat in the Veenpark, as a vice-principal placing prisoners in the Veenhuizen prison, or as an archaeologist removing various layers of earth at the Hunebed. Families will start seeing the locations and surrounding landscapes with fresh eyes, as they play a larger role in their experiences.

Usertesting on location

YIPP developed the experiences in close collaboration with their target audience. This includes user testing done through prototypes at an early stage of development. Initially at YIPP’s Amsterdam office, then on location in Drenthe.

The web app encourages visitors to explore further.

Each location is linked to a surrounding museum or institution. The web app encourages visitors to dig deeper at the locations and cultural institutions in Drenthe. In total, twenty different location-bound experiences will be developed.
