Experience Center Petten

Petten

This interactive experience centre, that will open in 2026 and will be housed in the dunes of Petten, welcomes visitors to discover all about nuclear medicine, energy transition and water management.

The Petten Experience center invites visitors to see and experience what the surrounding organisations on campus are accomplishing in the field of nuclear medicine, energy transtion, and water management. This discovery centre is set to open its doors early 2026. YIPP developed several interactive components that have already been extensively played and tested during user tests in our studio.

Interactive about radiation

Nuclear medicine

‘Understanding radiotion’ shows visitors that radiation is everywhere. They are tasked with placing six transparent cubes – with contents ranging from a handful of Brazil nuts, to sea clay, and bananas – in order from highest to lowest radiation. Playing with these cubes makes the game accessible to different ages while encouraging collaboration. While the objects may be recognisable, the outcomes are surprising. Every day, more than 30,000 patients worldwide are aided by the use of so-called medical isotopes from Petten. ‘Travelling with an isotope’ explains how these isotopes work using train locomotives and wagons that send visitors on a journey through the body. Help the trains on their way and watch them travel through the body in a larger-than-life projection.

Water management

What do our roofs do? Where do we store excess water? And what choices do we make during a drought? This multi-player game askes players to work together and make decisions about water management. The results are immediately visible, both on the table and in the large water column next to the table – which shows the water level continuously rising or falling in response to the choices made. The Petten coast and its locals have an exceptional history. A projection on the dyke surrounding you shows Petten through the years. By turning a wheel, you can navigate forwards and backwards in time and see the village of Petten being created, swept away and moved, while the dunes and dykes transform. What will the future hold for this place?

Energytable

Energy transition

A large table featuring a cloud landscape above, a city, and an energy landscape lit by LED lines, this is where you’ll find three games about energy. A quiz looks at different energy sources as visitors select the correct one by placing an icon on the table. At the other two screens that run directly through the table by continuous LED lines, visitors make sustainable choices for energy use and learn to use the right energy sources in different circumstances.
