Last year, Esther van Gent reached out to us. She is the founder of Cuban Cultural Ventures, a non-profit organisation that sets out to launch cultural projects in cooperation with Cuban and Dutch partners. She asked us to help create an interactive for the Sala Cartografia.

Whereas other Cuban museums only display objects and printed texts, the Palacio del Segundo Cabo wanted to be the first Cuban museum to extensively try out digital multimedia, an absolute novelty. Together with Esther and staff from the Palacio, we created an interactive that reveals details on beautiful old maps, often created by Dutch seafarers.
All maps belong to the Dutch collections of the Nationaal Archief, Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, Koninklijke Bibliotheek - Nationale bibliotheek van Nederland, Bijzondere Collecties UvA, Rijksmuseum, and the Scheepvaartmuseum.

The Cartography Room in the beautiful Palacio del Segundo Cabo in Havana Vieja was opened November 1, 2017, by the vice-minister of Science, Dr. Fernando González, and the Dutch ambassador, mrs. Alexandra Valkenburg.
Aside from the embassy, contributions were made by sponsors like Damen Shipyards, Royal Boskalis, Royal IHC and Van Oord Marine Ingenuity.
