The former Dutch colonies
Resistance Museum, Amsterdam
This extension to the Resistance Museum Amsterdam's permanent exhibition brings to life over thirty personal stories of war, exploitation, resistance, and the struggle for independence through eight interactive screens.
The new permanent exhibition "The former Dutch colonies: from WWII to independence" presents a unique perspective on the big changes that the war brought in Indonesia, Surinam, and the Dutch Caribbean islands. Personal stories are linked to historical events using photographs, video footage, and objects. YIPP incorporated over thirty stories into eight interactive screens that immediately show the storyteller, their location, and the theme. At a glance, visitors can see the different perspectives, and are encouraged to open multiple stories. Take a trip through time to the different Dutch colonies.

The stories are available in seven languages and can be viewed at visitors’ own pace using a slider. The parallax effect creates dynamic image presentation while maintaining focus on the storyteller and location.
The epilogue that YIPP developed is a retrospective on the Dutch colonial past through a series of rotating portraits and quotes. ‘The former Dutch colonies: from WWII to independence’ illuminates this often overlooked history.
